Writing Better Sonnets Ep 2: Norfolk Sprung Thee by Sir Henry Howard
So this is the second in a series of videos where I am using my 10 years of more writing and life experience to redraft and improve the poems that I wrote for my undergraduate dissertation in 2014. I am also working on publishing this collection, so hopefully, by the end of this video series you’ll be able to buy the book with all the poems that your feedback helped to shape - cool right?
This sonnet is inspired by Norfolk Sprung Thee by Sir Thomas Wyatt and is about Boris the Campus Cat at St Matt's UWE Bristol.

Solastalgia by Ciarán Hodgers | Book Review
Просмотров 11510 месяцев назад
In his second poetry collection Irish poet Ciarán Hodgers explores the intersection of mental health and the natural world; what it means and how it feels to seek out better states of being, both individually and as part of a living ecology. These poems ask what trees can teach us about grief; considers evolutionary biology as a metaphor for the counselling process; how autumn can encourage us ...

Love the honesty of your vids…comforting to know we all struggle to get it right (and I can finally come out with regard to me dipping into RhymeZone on occasion!). I love sonnets but have never written one…I’ll have to try now! Fluffy ginger ruff….that’s gonna stay with me for a while..I like your new version, but think you’re right..there’s a different poem in there struggling to get out..but hey, what do I know?! Lovely to meet you in the Stripy Duck the other night by the way, and have enjoyed your book immensely..what a voice…

It was really helpful to hear you say that you thought Villanelles were hard. As I really like your work, so to hear you say it's hard it must be. I couldn't imagine coming up with one from scratch, I just worked from an existing poem and found my way working it through it that way. I can't believe you thought your poem was bad for a first draft that is killer, gosh Josie. Sorry, I heard you say you like a strong critique but haven't got one for ya.

This is attempt 1 for my high school class :) Edit: oh i messed up at the end....oh well Pantoum for Growing Up Always thinking, Just one more year. Never actually getting there, To that place where I’d finally feel That I had grown. Never actually getting there Because no one ever thinks that I have changed. That I had grown, Oddly content…but wanting more. Because no one ever thinks that I have changed, I skirt the responsibilities of age, Oddly content but wanting more Time to experience without consequence. I skirt the responsibilities of age, Longing for that simpler Time to experience without consequence. It's always interesting to learn about other poets' processes. Mine differs from yours in several respects. I almost never start with a handwritten draft. I prefer to see it on my computer screen. Part of the reason may be that I've never really liked my handwriting, and I like going immediately to seeing what it looks like typed out. Plus then I can start to do some early revision. I agree that reading the poem out loud to yourself is a crucual step. I belong to a workshop that meets once a month, so I usually go there for feedback from other poets. But an open mike night is also a good idea if there is one nearby. There are also a couple of steps that I take with my phone. I often email myself a draft of my poem so that I can pull it out and reread it whenever I have a spare minute and the mood strikes me. The other is that if an idea for revision pops into my head during the day I will text it to myself, and come back to it when I'm revising the poem on my computer.

So really neither of these pronunciations are right...if you speak french, the front of the word should be more similar to the "r" and the end of bonjour. The stress should be on the first syllable, more similar to "GUZzle" than "ghaZAL." If you're going for an anglicized pronunciation, the word I think would actually be closest is "gazelle." I think English-speakers often say "guzzle" to try to replicate that "gh" sound better. Regardless, preparing to try to teach the ghazal to my students, and this overview is very helpful. Thank you!

I am literally crying listening to this. Walking to the corner shop, has become something that I rarely do. I work remotely and go into the office once a month, which is 1hr 45 mins away. Numerous times I have struggled to get there, faint, struggling to walk, needing to buy a suitcase twice, so that I can rest on the handle as I walk. And having to book a hotel to stay overnight because there is no way I can physically make the journey back. I take taxi's almost everywhere. I had to go from London to Reading recently and from London to Oxford and had to take a taxi to and from both because I physically couldn't do the commute. I have spoken to the Dr's so many times but they just fob me off, with blood tests that reveal nothing and the cycle starts over again. Thank you so much for sharing.

The whole notion of 'courtship' as 'hunting', the desired as 'prey', could certainly do with a good kicking here, linking it to that long history whilst demonstrating what a sick and abhorrent metaphor / mindset it is - even a genuine hunter, the bear, is preferable to those who still operate within that framework.

Overall, this poem is pretty good. I like the rhythm, particularly with "to protect us" and "to digest us." I feel that the poem needs some visceral descriptions to make the point clear about how scared and uneasy we feel around men and how women have evolved to have to resort to using the survival mechanisms in order to survive, but we should be telling men to not attack women. Something like men claw off our clothes and thrust themselves into us until they roar with gratification or something of that ilk that can match the iambic meter and rhyme. As for the name of the collection, "Little Songs" is simple and is more or less what it says on the tin when it comes to sonnets. Hope all this helps.
